Watch This: Kids React to Rotary Phones AKA You Are Old

Children are flummoxed by dial tones, busy signals, and the concept of “long distance” calling.

When confronted with a paleolithic phone with, gasp, a rotary dial, the kids of Kid’s React have no idea what to do. They struggle with the dial, eventually giving up saying it takes too long and is too difficult to turn. Then they spend a few minutes trying to figure out how to send text messages on it (“dial the one for A, B, or C…” “but how does the other person read it?” “Morse Code?”). Adorable, but OMG you’ll feel old. Wait’ll they see a phone book. (via Towleroad; Related: BuzzFeed)

At least this one is the cast of Made In Chelsea so that makes it even more obnoxious and even that much better. All I want are my TOWIE and Desperate Scousewives versions and I will be satiated…..for now.

Armory Arts Week is now in full-swing with too much to do but here are the major fairs and some other highlights. If you aren’t in New York City, I’ve gone to a LOT of trouble to add the links for each fair and auction site so you can still experience a TON of art online – for FREE – in your sweatpants! The parties are another thing altogether – why do you want to know about them if you aren’t invited? The Armory Show. 12th Ave at 55th St. March 6-9 (opening 3/5) 152 Exhibitors

It can be confusing because this show, the annual Art Show, organized by the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) is actually at The Armory uptown on Park Avenue, while the Armory Show is at the piers. It features curated solo, two-person, and thematic exhibitions by some of the nation’s leading art dealers. All ticket proceeds benefit the Henry Street Settlement, one of New York’s most effective social services agencies. It’s the very blue-chip, old-school money set – but they BUY! The Art Show, The Park Avenue Armory Park Ave. @ 67th St. March 5-9, 72 Exhibitors

To be honest, I’ve never been a huge fan, but in the last several years Scope has gotten more experimental in their programs, like the one in Miami during Art Basel last December, held for the first time on the beach in a tent. This year, crossing multiple creative disciplines and geographic boundaries, the New York edition will be held at Skylight studios in Moynihan Station, across from Madison Square Garden, which will become the new Penn Station. If you go, check out my new work with both Converge Gallery (Very Much So, left), as well as Fuchs Projects which is showing two new series that I just started. Scope, Skylight at Moynihan Station, 312 West 33rd Street, March 7-9, 67 Exhibitors

The Independent Art Fair takes place in the former Dia Art Foundation building and frees exhibitors from the confines of booths that most fairs feature. Rooted primarily in the Williamsburg art scene, it celebrates smaller, independent galleries and aims to re-define the art fair experience (something half the smaller fairs claim) from a more alternative and avant-garde position. Independent, Dia Center for the Arts, 548 West 22nd Street, March 7-9 (vernissage 3/6) 56 Exhibitors

Moderated by curator Alice Gray Stites, The Moving Image Art Fair will have a panel discussion on Saturday selling video art online, where Paddle8′s co-founder Aditya Julka will join other experts to explore how new media and commerce meet on the Internet. Preview it on ArtSy. Moving Image, 269 11th Avenue, March 6-9 (opening 3/6) 28 Exhibitors

The Old School on Mott Street is the site for the curator-driven Spring/Break Art Show. Works from the fair are available for auction on Paddle8, benefiting arts education program ProjectArt. My pal Sean Fader (the guy who dated 100+ guys and photographed them) is doing an performance piece called The Wishing Pelt, where you rub his chest hair and whisper your wish in his ear. Spring/Break, Old School, 233 Mott Street March 6-9 (preview 3/4) 34 Exhibitors

Volta is an invitational show of up and coming artists and their solo projects. They used to be in an awful office building on 34th Street but their new location is in a SoHo loft. With 98 “solo shows” this must be one gigantic loft. Volta, 82 Mercer Street March 7-9 (preview 3/6) 98 Exhibitors

Billed as an “alternative fair”, Fountain says it tries to “reinvent the art fair experience” but it’s an art fair with emerging artists, more affordable work and in the past, the results are mixed. But the mood is friendly and fun with a “we’re all in this together” vibe. Fountain, 69th Regiment Armory 68 Lexington Avenue, March 7-9 (preview 3/7) 66 Exhibitors

PLUS
The Biennial is sometimes frustrating and and tedious. New York magazine’s art critic Jerry Saltz has this take on it (Top floor? Good. The rest? Not so good.) No matter, this Whitney Biennial, is the last to be presented in the museum’s uptown Breuer building. Next time it will be in their new Piano-designed space on The Highline. (One block from my front door, btw) Go – and then bitch about it. It’s a tradition. Whitney, 945 Madison Avenue @ 75th Street. (thru 5/25)

It’s not an art fair but still a chance to see good work with an attached dollar amount. Philips has the reputation of being the hipster younger brother of the two old-school auction house, Christie’s and Sotheby’s. Here you’ll find flavor-of-the-month, Oscar Murillo, Wade Guyton and a nice figure by the late Keith Haring (left) Philips Auction House, Contemporary Art & Design Auction, March 6 7PM, 450 Park Avenue

Art blog Hyperallergic and Tumblr are presenting The Tumblr Art Symposium for art in Bushwick. As a bonus to the exhibitions featuring prominent artists who use Tumblr primarily as their medium, the event will also have drinks and dancing too. Virtual becomes physical. I like it. The Tumblr Art Symposium, 319 Scholes Street, Brooklyn, March 9th, 6pm-1am.

The Brucennial began in 2008 in the studio of The Bruce High Quality Foundation, a former weed growing operation next to the High Times Deliverance Church on the edge of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy under the JMZ. A hundred or so friends and friends of friends came over and they made themselves a Brucennial. For whatever reason, this is the last one and, once again, it’s right up the street from me, so I have no excuse NOT to check it out tomorrow. The Last Brucennial/ The Bruce High Quality Foundation, 847 Washington Street March 7- April 4

The Guy Who Came Up With The Cronut Has “Inovented”, Again: The Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shot

You may be sick of hearing about the Cronut™™™, but looks like its creator, Dominque Ansel, has gone and done it again. The Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shot. It’s cookies and milk – in one. Ansel told Eater that he came up with the idea when he ate his first Oreo, which was only a few weeks ago. (Cookies and milk aren’t a “thing” in France.) “If everyone was drinking milk with cookies, you might as well make a dessert that allows them both to be combined.” And the Chocolate Chip Cookie Milk Shot was born. The chocolate chip cookie gets formed into a shot container that holds milk without leaking. If nothing else, by making dessert magic again, he’s cornering the market on the sweet-tooth, “What’s next?” arena. The shots will be available this Sunday, March 9 at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. Start lining up now. Damn YOU, FOD!: Sorry, The HUVr Is Not Happening – Yet

Sorry to burst your high-flying dreams, but Funny or Die seems to be behind HUVr, the mysterious tech company claiming to have invented the first hoverboard. The costume designer who worked on the shoot posted pics of the experience on her online resume, which has now been removed. The clip from HUVr’s YouTube channel, which has nearly 9 million hits, appeared online Tuesday. It claims to show off a real-life version of Back To The Future II‘s fictional hoverboard. The video features a slew of high-flying celebrity endorsers, including Christopher Lloyd, Tony Hawk and Moby. The company’s website claims its team consists of “materials science, electricity & magnetism experts who’ve solved an important part of one of science’s mysteries: the key to antigravity.” Despite the impressive (fake) viral campaign, the only place you’ll find hoverboards for now is in this clip – or your dreams.

The Annie Trailer Is Here! The Annie Trailer Is Here!

OMG. It’s the Annie remake starring Quvenzhané Wallis, Jamie Foxx, and Cameron Diaz after the jump and YOU’RE GOING TRO PLOTZ!

Quvenzhané Wallis IS the rag-tag orphan with the can-do spirit. Jamie Foxx IS the bombastic billionaire with the heart of gold. And Cameron Diaz, well, Cameron’s Cameron and she kind of misses the mark as the boozy, orphan-hating Miss Hannigan. (I would have gone with Courtney Love, but nobody asked me, and let’s just reserve judgment until opening day). Anyway – this looks  AMAAAAAAAAZING. Transposing the story from the Depression to today works on a lot of levels and opens up the story to a more modern look and feel. I’m a sucker for a nice period piece, but they were going to get ME in the theater no matter what. It’s the tween audience they’ve got to target and New Deal jokes and Garbo references weren’t going to do THAT.

I’m sure gonna miss Ann Reinking and Geoffrey Holder, though. And Carol Burnett. And Tim Curry and Bernadette Peters.  HEY! Where the hell are Rooster and Lily St Regis? THEY CAN’T HAVE ANNIE WITHOUT ROOSTER AND LILY ST REGIS (“like the hotel!”!)!

Omg, an they better include “Dumb Dog” I LOVE “DUMB DOG”. Do you know NOT A DAY HAS GONE BY since 1982 that I don’t sing that song (LOUDLY and WITH FEELING) to myself? True story. It’s some sort of Asbergers thing, I suspect, and woe be to any roommate or boyfriend who is subjected to it, but there you go. It might be my FAVORITE SONG IN THE HISTORY OF MUSICAL THEATER. Pleeeeeeeeeease have “Dumb Dog.” Watch it below NOW.

The Hottest Looks from the Jean Paul Gaultier Fall/Winter 2014

Jean Paul Gaultier has Blighty on the mind this season, and the results are BLOODY BRILLIANT!

Look! Look! HOW FABULOUS! The clothes this season are all eminently wearable – punky daywear with lots of mad plaids and British flags and such – things that you could actually pull off without looking like Anna Piaggi or Isabella Blow. It’s like super-high end Trash & Vaudeville (is that still a thing? Do kids still wear Trash & Vaudeville?). It’s fun and fabulous and the models are to die for. I love the cut-rate Carmen Dell’Orefice (wah-wah) and the mustachio’d ginger. And I need, need, need that Union Jack puffy coat (even if it adds TWENTY POUNDS, I’m sure). Check out my favorite looks below.  (via Getty Images; featured image: Pacific Coast News)

London/Istanbul Calling – RuPaul’s Drag Race Screening

Hello dears, Holestar here.

I’m currently in Istanbul, hence my  lateness reporting back about this weeks London screening of RuPaul’s Drag Race (boasting is vulgar, I know).

As a tribute to the legend that is Ms Liza Minnelli and Ellen’s Oscars shenanigans, I dedicated my pre screening number to her, singing Maybe This Time. If you think she’s just the daughter of Judy Garland, think on. I thoroughly recommend watching Liza with a Z and Liza Live at Radio City Hall. Pure showbiz.

This week drew some incredible looks from the assembled crowd of drag addicts and Miss Congeniality for RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4, Latrice Royale herself was in the house. Woo!!

See you next Wednesday, Madame Jojo’s from 21:45

Smooches x

Must-Watch Video: The Best Lawyer Commercial Ever Made?

$

Pittsburg defense attorney Daniel Muessig is the scumbag lawyer any scumbag criminal would be proud to hire.

Dan Muessig is a REAL ATTORNEY. We know that because of the flashing chyron over his sales pitch. His fabulously blunt commercial features a montage of (fictional, hopefully) burglars , drug dealers, and prostitues saying “Thanks Dan!” as they merrily continue to commit their crimes.

Says Muessig: “I’m the Pittsburgh criminal defense attorney Pittsburgh criminals hire when they commit crimes.” Then, as images of famous gangsters flash, he adds: ”Trust me, I may have a law degree, but I think like a criminal.” Good to know!

“Any criminal defense attorney who promises you a result is most likely a liar or a scumbag,” Muessig continues. “But what I can promise you is my committed, fighting effort to make sure you’re adequately defended on any charge that you’re facing. I pick up the phone, I answer calls, I return letters, and I make jail visits. Because I’ll probably be there, visiting my friends anyway.”

Love it! (via Slate)

And it’s the saddest “Happy” you’re ever going to hear.

On the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, Foxes (aka Louisa Rose Allen) covers Pharrell’s “Happy” with a bit of Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” thrown in for good effect. I’m hesitant to say that I like it because I have a feeling the “Happy” covers are just getting started, and the last thing on EARTH we need is the Pepperdine Water Polo Team lipsyncing to it and the touring cast of Anything Goes lipsyncing to it and a bunch of secretaries at Merrill Lynch lipsyncing to it… YOU KNOW how people are. It’s enough to turn you off music altogether. (via Towleroad)

Just last month, the 24-year-old actor/musician announced that he was changing careers and was now a certified Uber driver. Which seemed kind of odd.  Below is the teaser video for a YouTube series he’s doing, though, where he secretly films passengers in his car. So it all makes sense.
