Oscar swag bag Oscar swag bag Oscar swag bag The Oscar losers don’t go home empty-handed, you know, thanks to the annual Oscar gift bag. (Not sure who this “model” is…?) Tom Hanks Spencer Tracy Shirley MacLaine Robert Redford Robert Mitchum Rita Hayworth Norma Shearer Meryl Streep Marlon Brando Leonardo diCaprio Katherine Hepburn Julia Roberts Jimmy Stewart Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney Ellen DeGeneres Christian Bale Cate Blanchett Cary Grant Brad Pitt Bob Hope Bill Murray Bette Davis Angelina Jolie Amy Adams I know this is a silly game but I can’t really help myself. Whenever you focus on the Hollywood heavyweights, like last night’s Oscars did, you think back on the golden era of Hollywood and try to figure out our star equivalency today. Not their looks as much, (although these two examples are a bit uncanny) but more the kind of actors they are and the roles they can play. OK, here goes:

George Clooney = Cary Grant
Cate Blanchette = Katherine Hepburn
Meryl Streep = Bette Davis
Tom Hanks = Jimmy Stewart
Julia Roberts = Norma Shearer
Amy Adams = Shirley MacClaine
Scarlett Johansson = Elizabeth Taylor
Bill Murray = Spencer Tracy
Tilda Swinton = Joan Crawford
Matthew McConaughey = Kirk Douglas
Jennifer Lawrence – Jane Fonda
Ben Affleck = Paul Newman
Jonah Hill = Jackie Gleason
Lupita N’Yongo = Grace Kelly
Sasha Baron Cohen = Charlie Chaplin
Jared Leto = Montgomery Clift
Charlize Theron = Kim Novak
Christian Bale = Marlon Brando
Leonardo diCaprio = Robert Mitchum
Brad Pitt = Robert Redford
Angelina Jolie = Rita Hayworth
Ellen Degeneres = Bob Hope

You know how you can tell if I’m kinda right? Cast a movie from today with past stars or vice versa. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Ben Affleck and Brad Pitt? Yes! The Philadelphia Story with George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Tom Hanks? Yes! Lost In Translation with Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor? Yes!Tom Hanks Spencer Tracy Shirley MacLaine Robert Redford Robert Mitchum Rita Hayworth Norma Shearer Meryl Streep Marlon Brando Leonardo diCaprio Katherine Hepburn Julia Roberts Jimmy Stewart Hollywood heavyweights George Clooney Ellen DeGeneres Christian Bale Cate Blanchett Cary Grant Brad Pitt Bob Hope Bill Murray Bette Davis Angelina Jolie Amy Adams

Robbie Rogers openly gay NBA LGBT rights Landon Donovan Jason Collins Galaxy Equality The idea of an openly gay player (named Michael Sam) in the NFL has some players freaking the freak out. “What if he pats someone on the butt?” asked one such former player. Openly gay NBA player Jason Collins just played two games for the Brooklyn Nets this week and hell didn’t freeze over – although, the actual weather in Brooklyn begs to differ. Soccer’s Robbie Rogers starting another season with the Los Angeles Galaxy after coming out over a year ago. Galaxy team leader Landon Donovan (top) posted the note here about a mandatory night out: “No wives, gfs, bfs, sidepieces.” Rogers, who is dating Arrow TV producer, Greg Berlanti (bottom left) noted the inclusion in a tweet to Donovan which just said: “Thanks for including me.” How cool. How civilized. For once, how 2014. (via GayStarNews)Robbie Rogers openly gay NBA LGBT rights Landon Donovan Jason Collins Galaxy Equality

The Oyler House Richard Oyler Richard Neutras Dessert Retreat Mitch Glaser Lone Pine Kelly Lynch Architecture

The Oyler House Richard Oyler Richard Neutras Dessert Retreat Mitch Glaser Lone Pine Kelly Lynch Architecture In 1959, a working-class government employee in the tiny desert town of Lone Pine, California, asked world-famous modern architect Richard Neutra to design his modest family home. To his surprise, Neutra agreed. Thus began an unlikely friendship that would last until Neutra’s death in 1970. The Oyler House: Richard Neutra’s Desert Retreat tells the story of this house and its stunning desert setting through interviews with Richard Oyler, actress Kelly Lynch, who currently owns the house along with her husband, screenwriter Mitch Glaser, Neutra’s two sons, and well-known LA real estate agent Crosby Doe. I just watched a screening of this film almost by accident. I know Kelly and Mitch through the man that changed my life most (except my father) Michael O’Donoghue. Michael was the brilliant comedy writer that was first headwriter on Saturday Night Live, nearly 40 years ago. Mitch was Michael’s writing partner and best friend. Michael started the paint by number collection that I know own and use and the source for my paintings. He passed away twenty years ago in ’94. Just two years earlier, I was at Mitch and Kelly’s fun wedding in LA. I knew they owned a Neutra house in the dessert (but not the name) as I had seen photos of it in Italian Vogue by Bruce Weber that had always stuck with me. I signed up to see this screening at SoHo House without reading the description fully, just knowing it was about Neutra. Another old pal, Ann Magnuson has a sweet little Neutra House in Silverlake that I just photographed along with Mitch and Kelly’s stunning Lautner House (and Wow’s Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato’s fantastic LA digs) when I was there last fall. Anyway, this documentary and this house and its story are VERY movingly told, like some mystery that I had clues to all along. As you can see from the photos, it’s uniquely beautiful location and an early example of a modest Neutra house that is truly magical, due in great part to the rock formations Oyler’s kids called “the two big toes” which are sighted perfectly – cinematically, really. I fell in love with it, Oyler and frankly my friend Kelly’s kindness, intelligence and sensitivity, that I’ve experienced myself and miss. I hope to visit one day and report back. See this film if you love modern architecture – and a good mystery with a happy ending. The Oyler House Richard Oyler Richard Neutras Dessert Retreat Mitch Glaser Lone Pine Kelly Lynch Architecture

The Pyramid: An Oral History (Did Someone Say “Oral”?)

The Pyramid The Lady Bunny the East Village RuPaul Paul Swede Oral history Miss Guy Linda Simpson Legendary Club 80s The Pyramid The Lady Bunny the East Village RuPaul Paul Swede Oral history Miss Guy Linda Simpson Legendary Club 80s Yes, an oral history of the New York club that served as laboratory/ repertory theater and clubhouse for the likes of John Kelly, Larry Tee, Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons, RuPaul, Lady Bunny and many, MANY others. The Pyramid was the cornerstone of the East Village scene for those who came to watch the inspired performances. I moved to Avenue B in ’82 and stumbled into the club one Sunday afternoon when there was a rehearsal of their cracked version of The Family Feud. I wasn’t there watching 15 minutes before I got pulled onstage. I was hooked. At the time, I was working at Vogue and I would collect the makeup and jewelry at work and bring them to the dressing room. (Free makeup and jewelry is like catnip to drag queens, you know.) I also had access to unlimited Polaroid film so, I was always taking pictures. One Halloween, I borrowed a $5000 Bill Blass gold, sequined dress along with gold lizard pumps and Chanel earrings from the fashion closet at Vogue and took Polaroids all night wearing that look. (I wish I had easy access to those pictures now – an exhibit and book will happen someday.) I LOVED The Pyramid – cheered on my friend’s performances, danced on the bar, made life-long friends (too many of those lives were cut short.) I eventually produced and MC’d Straight To Hell on Sunday nights there. But that’s a whole ‘nother story. Here’s Larry, Paula, Brian and Miss Guy:

Larry Tee: That was the first trip we made to New York was with my group Now Explosion and we played at The Pyramid. Somebody said “Oh, the Pyramid Club is really cool,” so we sent a press package with a cassette of our stuff. Bad, bad, bad. So bad. How bad can it get baby? Totally unplayable, but, they really loved what we were doing.

Paula Swede: I remember the day that Now Explosion came off their bus from Georgia. Larry Tee, RuPaul and Lady Bunny. There was five or six. They literally spilled out of a bus, and they just stumbled in and they were amazing. RuPaul and I traded T-shirts. He used to do a little fanzine called New York Is a Big Black N***er. It was hilarious. He was wearing gaiter boots for fly fishing, little hot pants and a shirt, braids in his hair, so cute.

Brian Butterick: The first time I saw RuPaul he was in a band called Wee Wee Pole, it was so bad. He was doing an androgynous punk thing. He had a mohawk. Very little drag, but a little nod to drag in there. This was way before “Supermodel.” RuPaul was living in the basement of the Pyramid. And she was keeping her clothes in a bag in the coat check.

Larry Tee: We brought him to New York for the first time and he performed with us when he first came up. I remember the first time Ru did drag, that we were aware of. We made her be a bridesmaid for one of our wedding shows with Now Explosion. And when she showed up with her white hat and standing a head above all the other bridesmaids, you know, time stood still.

Paula Swede: The Now Explosion came with the person who would be calling themselves Lady Bunny. There was already a Bunny on the scene, Bunny Manhattan. Bunny Manhattan was totally pissed off that Lady Bunny was using the name Bunny.

Miss Guy: Lady Bunny was the queen of Pyramid, in my eyes anyway… I thought she was the perfect drag queen.

writer Veronica Riverdale Lena Dunham Jughead HBO Girls Comics Betty archie Not just any comics either, but Archie comics! This was my obsession when I was a kid. Archie comics were my life. Well, Lena Dunham and I have something in common though she gets to live out the full Archie fantasy; she’s writing for them. Lena has been tapped to write a four-part series to make it’s grand debut in 2015. The assumption is that she will focus on the ladies of Riverdale (DUH) trying to get a new audience excited about the comic. This is gonna be epic. Betty and Veronica 2.0.
