This Is Not a Toy Takashi Murakai Pharrell Williams Daft punk Canadas Design Museum Jacob the Jeweler

This Is Not a Toy Takashi Murakai Pharrell Williams Daft punk Canadas Design Museum Jacob the Jeweler Pharrell Williams’, Grammy winner and THE unavoidable music star of 2013, is also up for an Oscar and performing this Sunday’s ceremonies. He’s also curated the new This Is Not a Toy exhibit featured at Canada’s Design Museum in Toronto. Together with Design Exchange, Pharrell serves as the guest curator bringing us KAWS, Takashi Murakami and Misaki Kawai all together under one roof. This Is Not A Toy transforms DX’s Exhibition Hall into a candy-coloured space evoking smiles through exuberant, imaginative works. Visitors absorb a multi-faceted sensory experience, as they are immersed in a space filled with music, video, and vinyl via iPad Air, iPad mini with Retina display and iMac. In-depth interviews with artists, watch stop-motion videos created by fans of Kidrobot, and get a look at how vinyl toys are made. The showstopper, The Simple Things, is a sculpture created by the trio of creatives: Williams, Murakami and Jacob Arabo, a.k.a. “Jacob the Jeweler” (last photo). The fiberglass, metal and steel head features a wide grin that reveals blinged-out ordinary objects, including a Pepsi can, a cupcake, and a Heinz ketchup bottle. First unveiled during Art Basel in 2009, The Simple Things has been making the rounds to London’s Tate Museum, Versailles, Qatar’s Museum of Islamic Art, and now, Toronto’s Design Exchange. Among the paintings and sculptures on view are: FriendsWithYou’s animated short film Cloudy and custom Rainbow Vortex; Misaki Kawai’s tactile, comb-able animal-shaped fur paintings; and prized items from Williams’ personal art collection, including Milo on Rocking Horse by Japanese fashion label A Bathing Ape; Be@rbrick representations of his Grammy-winning partners Daft Punk; and commissioned KAWS paintings, aptly named KAWSBOB 3 and KURFS (CROWD). Other contributing artists include Veteran neo-pop artist, Yoshitomo Nara, Huck Gee, Coarse, Frank Kozik, and Bill McMullen. The exhibit will be on display through May 19th. For more info go to the museum’s website. (via Hip Hop Wired)This Is Not a Toy Takashi Murakai Pharrell Williams Daft punk Canadas Design Museum Jacob the Jeweler

Kroll Show: Rock N’ Reunion (Feat. The Late James St. James?)

Are you watching Kroll Show? Last season he created some pretty hilarious running characters like the two Liz’s in the reality show take-off PubLIZity. This season episode 4 we get Nash Rickey’s Rock N’ Reunion (Sponsored by Stamps) where 80s rocker, Nash tries to reunite his old band, Sloppy Secondz. The bit runs throughout the episode and has some pretty funny gags, but none gagged me more than the gravesite visit to the band’s “beloved keyboardist James St. James”! Not to worry, OUR James is fine – last time I checked… but they are very close in age, I think. Oddly, I knew James in the 80s, you know, and he looked EXACTLY like this! (Kidding. He had blonde hair.) So, besides liking the show, you see, I HAD to post. Watch the whole episode here. Sloppy Secondz Kroll Show james st. james Comedy Central

Real Estate Porn 2: Casa Mi Is Art-itecture

Switzerland real estate porn Casa Mi Art Architecture Swiss architects Daluz/Gonzalez have created the sublime Casa Mi, which sits on a serene lake in Herrliberg, Switzerland. Mixing concrete and marble with minimalism, to me this is a sculpture for living. Every angle reveals more refined beauty – it needs no art on its walls, nor words to describe its genius. But those bedroom sheets have to go… (via Fubiz)Switzerland real estate porn Casa Mi Art Architecture

starchitects real estate porn New York Herzog & de Meuron 58 Leonard Three million would buy you a pretty sweet pad in New York City, you’d think. What about 10 times that? At the moment, there are many more expensive apartments than this one on the market in New York right now (one townhouse for $114 million) but none more jaw-dropingly dramatic than this brand new, full-floor penthouse in Tribeca with 5 bedrooms and 5 and a half baths. Literal 360 degree, floor-to-fourteen-foot-ceiling panoramic views from river to river, the great room has three exposures and 2 terraces with views of the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges. The interiors, by starchitects Herzog & de Meuron, feature a custom sculptural fireplace in the entry gallery and “an Absolute Black granite grand piano shaped kitchen island with custom-sculpted floating hood” in your ginormous eat-in kitchen with hidden everything, that really looks like the food area of the future. The master suite is 40 feet long with a 14-foot high, giant screen playing 24/7 called the Manhattan skyline. Seriously, as beautiful as these spaces are, I would just stare out the windows all day long – just like our girl here. Dear GOD IN HEAVEN, I almost fell out of my chair during Tuesday night’s Twisted when Avan Jogia walked out in those green shorts. Holy moly – that’s a lump of SOMETHING in there. A mound of veiny goodness, I suspect. Watch the way it bulges and moves and strains at the fabric. I must have watched this three-second clip A HUNDRED TIMES. And if THAT isn’t reason enough for you to start watching the show then I don’t know what is.

Sex Galaxy: First Green Blue Film?

$

Director/producer Mike Davis’ 100% recycled film, Sex Galaxy may stand as the world’s first green/blue film. Mashing up footage from vintage porn and sci-fi films, “the campy sci-fi comedy mixes strippers and Martians, rocket ships and robots, all spliced together into a semi-coherent romp.”

Since it’s kind of an adult film, it’s a “blue movie,” and since the footage is 100% recycled it’s “green,” so it’s possibly the world’s first green blue film.

Available on Netflix, or purchase a copy here.

The film was screened at Another Hole in the Head Film Festival, along with these other intriguing selections:

  • Machine Girl 2, a short spinoff of Japanese action/horror/comedy The Machine Girl, about a female ass-kicker who sprouts automatic weapons.
  • The Future of Fucking, a short set in 2035, when “sex is voice-activated, but orgasms are still earned the old-fashioned way — with machines.”
  • The Silence of the Sushi Rolls, a feature-length Japanese art-porn flick about a Tokyo sex crimes investigator who is targeted by a molester with a nasty contraption.

The Lost (& Found) Generation: Viral Poetry Has Three Plot Twists!

$

Derek Nichols (if that IS your real name?) decided to post a poem written by his younger brother, Jordan, who seems wise beyond his 14 years. Since it was posted on Wednesday, it has gone viral, as they say, BIG TIME.

Here’s the transcript of the poem:

Our Generation
“Our generation will be known for nothing.
Never will anybody say,
We were the peak of mankind.
That is wrong, the truth is
Our generation was a failure.
Thinking that
We actually succeeded
Is a waste. And we know
Living only for money and power
Is the way to go.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is a dumb thing to do.
Forgetting about that time,
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Changing our world for the better
Is something we never did.
Giving up
Was how we handled our problems.
Working hard
Was a joke.
We knew that
People thought we couldn’t come back
That might be true,
Unless we turn things around”

OK, ready for a plot twist? Now read it backwards, from bottom to top. Alright I’ll help you, just read this below, which the is the above in reverse.

“Unless we turn things around
That might be true,
People thought we couldn’t come back
We knew that
Was a joke.
Working hard
Was how we handled our problems.
Giving up
Is something we never did.
Changing our world for the better
Will not be easy, but we will try.
Forgetting about that time,
Is a dumb thing to do.
Being loving, respectful, and kind
Is the way to go.

Living only for money and power
Is a waste. And we know
We actually succeeded
Thinking that
Our generation was a failure.
That is wrong, the truth is
We were the peak of mankind.
Never will anybody say,
Our generation will be known for nothing.”

Amazing, right? This kid is BRILLIANT. Lots of people thought so. It was reposted and commented on and praised to the heavens across the worldwide interweb. Love these feel-good stories, don’t you? Wow. Except that it appears Derek’s brother, Jordan, found a very similar poem online and “tweaked it” to make it his own. Read this poem from 2011 by Jonathan Reed and see what you think?

The Lost Generation
“I am part of a lost generation.
And I refuse to believe that
I can change the world.
I realize this may be a shock, but
“Happiness comes from within”
Is a lie, and
“Money will make me happy”
So in thirty years, I will tell my children
They are not the most important thing in my life.
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
Work
Is more important than
Family
I tell you this:
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
But this will not be true in my era.
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
Thirty years from now, I will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of my divorce.
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making.
In the future,
Environmental destruction will be the norm.
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about this Earth.
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic.
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.
And all of this will come true unless we reverse it.”

And now you could read it this one in reverse too, but you can see this poetic palindrome is more than a little similar. I’m now waiting for someone to dig up a yellowed notepaper from 1952 with a similar poetic injustice. Beautiful poem, btw. I’m happy to read them both…

To me the third twist in this story, is that THIS story of Derek’s viral post, praise for originality, inspiration and then discovery of its origins reveals as much or more about our generation and the time we live in, than poetry. The internet is a warehouse of information and inspiration and also an empty vessel that’s already full of things to copy and/or be “inspired” by. We are so quick to judge from moment to moment that, even though the history of the world and its contents are at our Google-tips, we often lose sight of what’s real and what’s not. Draw your own conclusions, but I didn’t figure this out, I just connected the dots and painted in the numbers, using mass communication that’s at my fingertips.
