Paper Chase: Matisse At The Tate Moden

THe Tate Modern London Henri Matisse cut outs art exhibit Art Andy Warhol In his late sixties, when ill health prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors to make drafts for a number of commissions. He wrote that it was “like being given a second life”. Soon, Matisse chose cut-outs over painting: he had invented a new medium. I’m not sure how fresh this looks in 2014, because this particular style of Matisse has been copied by graphic artists and illustrators, SO much as to render them nearly mute today. At the time the work was created, a young art student, Andrew Warhola, wanted to BE Matisse and Andy’s incredible color sense has been traced back to this desire. So, to see these snowflowers, dancers, circus scenes and a his famous abstracted snail (below), in this new exhibition at the Tate Modern will be a rare opportunity and a thrill. (I’ll be in London myself in mid-May, although I could have seen it when it travels to MoMA this fall, as well.) These 120 works, made between ’36 and ’54, have come from collections around the world to be seen together for first time since they were created over 60 years ago. Another first – the Tate is broadcasting live into cinemas around the UK with a film about the exhibition too and as they put it, you can also “shop the full product range” online here. Below is a BBC documentary on Matisse’s life and work. If you want to skip ahead to 35:00, you can see more about how the work was created and an interview with Francoise Gilot, Picasso’s lover, who describes seeing his process of the cut-outs first-hand. Easter Egg Hunt!: How About A $33 Million Find?

windfall Wartski Russian Tsar lost Fabergé egg faberge egg Until the 1916 overthrow of tsar, Carl Faberge’s jewelery workshop made 50 Easter eggs for the royal family, each taking a year or more to craft. But the third egg ever made was on the brink of being melted down for scrap recently; Tsar Alexander III’s 1887 Easter gift to his wife, Tsarina Maria Feodorovna. The 3.2-inch egg is on an elaborate gold stand supported by lion paw feet with three sapphires suspend golden garlands around it, and a diamond acts an opening mechanism to reveal the Vacheron Constantin watch inside. An anonymous Mid-western man who had been left financially stretched after he apparently overestimated what the tiny golden egg would be worth once it was melted down. He’d been hoping to make $500 on it. In a fit of desperation last year, he typed three letters “egg” along with the name engraved on the clock it contained, “Vacheron Constantin” into Google and his search brought up a 2011 article describing a “frantic search” for the item, estimated to be worth $33 million. The man contacted Fabergé expert Kieran McCarthy and flew to London to visit McCarthy’s workplace, Wartski jewelers in Mayfair, where the egg was just displayed from April 14 to 17 for only the second time ever. McCarthy said he had no warning about the visit. “A gentleman had walked in wearing jeans, a plaid shirt and trainers. His mouth was just dry with fear,” McCarthy said, to the extent that he could barely speak. “He handed me a portfolio of photographs, and there was the egg, the Holy Grail of art and antiques. He didn’t look upon a work of art at all. He saw that it was pretty and it was nice, but he was buying on intrinsic value. He bought and sold.” The egg was thought to have been lost after the Soviets listed it for sale in 1922 as part of a policy of turning “treasures into tractors”. Eight, including the Third Imperial Egg, were thought to have been lost and two others are thought to have survived, but their locations still remain a mystery. The egg was purchased by a private collector who allowed the public to glimpse it for three days at Wartski before it disappeared from the public again. The White House Says Bieber Isn’t Getting Deported – Just Yet

the White House online petition Merger of the Century; Why Canada And Amerieca Should Become One Country justin bieber Immigration Diane Francis The petition created in January, entitled, “Deport Justin Bieber and revoke his green card” reached its threshold, so by its own rules, The White House had to weigh in. According to the We the People initiative, an online system in which anyone can create an account and petition the government, if a petition reaches a 100,000 signatures within a month of its posting, the administration’s White House staff is required to respond. It stated:

“We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture. We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing, Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nations youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society.”

Well, non-Beliebers, sorry to disappoint, but they WON’T be commenting on this one. The response was:

“The We the People terms of participation state that, ‘to avoid the appearance of improper influence, the White House may decline to address certain procurement, law enforcement, adjudicatory, or similar matters properly within the jurisdiction of federal departments or agencies, federal courts, or state and local government in its response to a petition.’ So we’ll leave it to others to comment on Mr. Bieber’s case, but we’re glad you care about immigration issues. Because our current system is broken. Too many employers game the system by hiring undocumented workers, and 11 million people are living in the shadows.”

Hey, perfect time to get an immigration plug in, right? It may be a moot point buy the time the Biebs turns 40, according to a new book by Diane Francis, “Merger of the Century: Why Canada and America Should Become One Country.” She thinks it’s a good idea and she’s serious too. The entire McLaughlin Group political talk show yesterday was devoted to the topic, but there was no mention that we’d get Justin Bieber in the bargain. For once both sides might agree – that would be a bridge too far.

It leaves out most of the Bronx and Staten Island completely, but this new map of Judgemental New York by Joe Larson, does point out the oil spill in Newtown Creek in the BIGGEST TYPE, sludge in the Gowanus, prisoners on Rikers Island and cheap gas in Jersey, which I take advantage of regularly – it’s 30 cents a gallon less! Read it and see what you might add – maybe even MORE rich people? (via Untapped Cities)

I went to brunch with friends at the new Marlton Hotel on 8th Street (good food, but it’s no secret that the rooms are tiny, even by New York standards.) I shot this tree in bloom at the Jefferson Market Library garden while the paps were out snapping these guys running around the city. The Marlton Hotel Sarah JessicaParker Rosie Huntington Whitely Only In New New York Miranda Kerr Mackelmore Jullianne Moore Anne Vyalitsyna

The famed Easter Parade, on the avenue, Fifth Avenue, continues in 2014. My old friend Robert Bryan, photographer and former men’s fashion director for The New York Times, snapped these yesterday of these peacocks in period attire, many of which are his friends and comrades in bringing back the past. You may remember my New Year’s Day photos taken this year in his time 1928 capsule apartment – yeah, THAT guy. Plus, you get a bonus – dogs in pastel top hats and a the last scene of Easter Parade, with Fred Astaire and Judy Garland!
