Mel B is a lady DJ on a breakfast show down under (with Sophie Monk and two men) and she took a twerking class for the sake of the show, natch. This was part of the result. There are a few accents that make me so happy just by hearing them and a Leeds accent is one of them. LOVE. Finland’s new stamps feature drawings by Finnish-born artist Touko Laaksonen, aka Tom of Finland. Tom’s hyper-masculine homoerotic drawings have attained iconic status in the gay genre and had an influence on pop culture and fashion in general. All stamps today are self-adhesive, of course but this reminds of an old joke on SNL’s Weekend update – “A new stamp will be issued to commemorate the world’s oldest profession; prostitution. The stamp will sell for 25 cents, 50 cents if you want to lick it.” The hot new stamps will go into circulation in late summer.

Bette Midler (you remember her from the Oscars this year, right?) posted this on Twitter at the beginning of this month:
“@Spotify and @Pandora have made it impossible for songwriters to earn a living: three months streaming on Pandora, 4,175,149 plays=$114.11.”
Recently, there’s been a growing outcry from songwriters and musicians, including Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, who say that Pandora and Spotify pay unfair royalty rates. Bette now claims that, while her songs have streamed on Pandora for the previous three months and been played more than 4 million times, the online radio station paid her barely enough to cover a cell phone bill for a month. In 2013, Pandora’s publicly traded stock sold for $368 per share and they had revenues of $638 million — but paid out $342.9 million in royalties to artists –more than half of its income. Including other expenses that adds up, according to Pandora, to a $40.7 million loss for the year. Pandora responded to the accusation in a correspondence with Billboard just two days after Midler posted her tweet, saying that she got her math wrong.
“Pandora paid more than $6,400 for those 4+ million plays, based on our 2014 rates which are published publicly. In terms of compensation to the creative community Pandora remains by far the highest paying form of radio. Pandora pays songwriters a greater percentage of revenue than terrestrial radio. And Pandora paid 48% of our revenue in performance royalties to rights-holders in 2013 – more than $300 million — while terrestrial radio was required to pay nothing.”

Situated somewhere between design, crafts and art, Nikoline Liv Andersen’s work is seeking to relocate the limits of our understanding of design and clothing and to challenge her audience when it comes to their perceptions of the world around us. Most of her work is executed by hand. Time and toil are two matters that do not appear to be negotiable. What is characteristic of Andersen’s work are the textile surfaces and structures that surprise the viewer with their material-constructions and -collisions. She builds up the textiles by adding layer after layer of fabric, knittings, pieces of lace, threads and yarns, but there are also furs, leather, plastic and even nails that can come to form part of the finished works. She decorates the surfaces with beads or sequins; she embroiders and sometimes paints right onto the textiles. In order to express the sensation of life’s fragility, which occupies her to a great degree, she initiates a process involving the decomposition of the finished work. She unstitches and tears open, adds substance and starts painting again – construction, decomposition and dissolution – again and again and again, until she feels satisfied with the result, which accordingly takes on depth and gives the eye a sense of three-dimensionality. Or she sews thousands of straws in different colors together to form a surface that transforms a known subject – the straw – into a hitherto unseen surface and form, which is brought forth by varying the distance between the rows and the length of the individual tubes. The surface calls something animal-like to mind. One of the challenges is to get the materials to resemble something that they are not: for example, to make cotton look like fur.

One of NYC’s most beloved drag performers is back with an all-new show of song, “dance” and of course, the raunchy humor which has made Bunny a popular entertainer for three decades. Expect oodles of new song parodies from crass to clever as the songstress re-works hits by artists as diverse as Prince, Adele, Katy Perry, Daft Punk, Bobbie Gentry and even Frank Sinatra. Her signature Laugh-In style routine of zingers zaps celebrities from Justin Bieber to Chris Christie and the Kardashians. There’s also a tribute to Dame Shirley Bassey’s more offbeat clas-sicks along with a wide variety of musical styles including Motown, hip-hop and jazz. Side-splitting videos—including a raucously funny roast of Bunny by Joan Rivers—allow the “lady” to change into a succession of eccentric (and large) costumes which match her trademark eccentric and large bouffant hairdo. “I had to cut a lot of the dancing from my shows because people kept coming up and shoving a wooden spoon between my teeth,” says Bunny. If you ever wanted to see Honey Boo Boo all grown up, Clowns Syndrome is the show for you!

There’s still plenty of jaw-dropping vulgarity, but a slightly more serious Bunny also slows down the daffiness occasionally to offer her own warped takes on Manhattan’s gentrification, reality TV, getting lost in the tech matrix and the folly of political correct harpies becoming thought police. Clowns Syndrome is performed every at 8PM every Tuesday at La Escuelita, Manhattan’s premiere latino dance club which doubles as a charming, undiscovered cabaret space with plenty of comfortable seating. Opening night is Tuesday April 29nd and it runs for 5 consecutive Tuesdays through May 27. The price is as cheap as her humor—$19.95 with a recession-friendly 1 drink minimum. La Escuelita is at 301 West 39th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Clowns Syndrome is co-written by Bunny and the bitter and hysterical Facebook sensation Beryl Mendelbaum.
Bunny’s last cabaret venture at La Escuelita got a rave review from the NY Times’ David Rooney, who wrote: “Most of Bunny’s best lines are unprintable here, but more than any performer I saw this year ‘the old pig in a wig, as she calls herself, made we weep with laughter, often while groaning with disgust. And isn’t that what the best low comedy is all about?” The performances attracted a star-studded audience with Alan Cumming, Debbie Harry, Andy Cohen, Marc Almond and Nona Hendryx. “That Ain’t No Lady!” then toured Los Angeles, San Francisco, St. Petersburg, Provincetown, Palm Springs, Puerta Vallarta and four cities in Australia.
Bunny reached out to several celebrities for endorsement quotes but didn’t hear back on deadline. So she imagined what a few might say:
