These one-of-a-kind pieces were given to Françoise Gilot, the mother of two of Picasso’s children, Claude and Paloma. Gilot later passed down the pieces to Carole Mallory, the model, actress, and author who was engaged to Claude in the 1960s. In “Life With Picasso,” Gilot describes how Picasso, with the help of Dr. Chatagnier, a dentist, made gold and silver jewelry through the lost wax process. “In all Pablo made about 10 necklaces… I thought they were all very nice except one, a rather heavy head of a satyr, in silver.” As it turned out, that satyr pendant (pictured below, left) fetched the most. $153,000. A round silver “sun” pendant brought in $141,000, while this silver brooch, with a drawing of Claude sold for $92,250. Each one smashed its pre-sale estimate of $15,000 to $20,000. “After a hotly competitive bidding contest for each, all three went home with a single purchaser. We’re pleased to see these works of art remain together,” said Gloria Lieberman, of Skinner. Just imagine if they were gold!? A Cement Factory Becomes A Cathedral Of Architectural Splendor

Ricardo Bofill conversion cement factory Architecture Ricardo Bofill conversion cement factory Architecture Forty years ago, architect Ricardo Bofill found a disused cement factory, an industrial complex from the turn of the century consisting of over 30 silos, subterranean galleries and huge machine rooms. He decided to transform it into the head office of his firm, Taller de Arquitectura. The factory was partially in ruins and was a laundry list of surrealist elements: stairs that climbed up to nowhere, mighty reinforced concrete structures that sustained nothing, pieces of iron hanging in the air, huge empty spaces filled up with magic. The torn down many of the silos and once the spaces had been redefined the process began of adaptation began. Eight of the silos remained. They became offices, a models laboratory, archives, a library, a projections room and a gigantic space known as “The Cathedral”, used for exhibitions, concerts and a whole range of cultural functions. The complex stands in the midst of gardens with eucalyptus, palms, olive trees and cypresses, like the set of fantastic movie that is difficult to tell if it is set in the past or in the future. I love reclaimed spaces. My ex and I adapted a turn-of-the-century gothic revival church into a home and eight years ago I bought a converted barn that I now live in, when I’m not in the city. I spend as much time as I can there (was just there for three weeks!) But I have to say, if I had my choice of all of the spaces on earth I could live, I think this might just be at the top of my list. I think could live here 1000 years and never tire of it. Daily Mail claims that the pilot of missing Flight MH370 was a political fanatic. This comes as police are investigating the possibility that he hijacked his own aircraft in a bizarre political protest.

What’s In Store for Season 5 of The Walking Dead

If you haven’t seen last night’s DEEPLY UPSETTING season finale of The Walking Dead, do not continue on to the conversation after the jump.

Goddamn Terminus, man. Why’d it have to be SO BAD right off the bat? You knew it wasn’t going to be the safe haven they thought it was. Even the name, Terminus, sounds too much like “terminal,” as in “predicted to lead to death.” But couldn’t our guys just get a couple of weeks off from relentlessly fighting for their lives EVERY MINUTE OF EVERY WEEK? Couldn’t they at least get to kick back and enjoy Terminus Mary’s barbecue? No, no, no. At least in last night’s finale, most of the group was reunited, albeit in a prison-like box car surrounded by a new group of bad guys. Not quite the upbeat ending we were hoping for. The takeaway, though? Rick nibbling on the bad guy’s neck, then getting all stabby-stabby with Carl’s would-be molester. HOT. So what’s in store for season five? The cast and crew speculate in the video above. And read recaps of last night’s episode at Entertainment Weekly and TVLine (where the speculation is they’re in a CANNIBAL CAMP!)

I’ll See You Again in 25 Years: My Visit to the Twin Peaks Set in 1989

I’ve unearthed these pics of me as a goofy 12-year-old visiting the set of Twin Peaks in 1989. My mom won a raffle at my LA elementary school where the prize was to visit the set – they were shooting the beginning of Season 2 at the time, and they had moved production from the Pacific Northwest to sound stages in Burbank, CA, where they had re-created all of the show’s iconic locations. And so my mom and I were traipsing around the Twin Peaks set on an afternoon in 1989 – very surreal! More photos from the visit can be seen on the Pretty Things Tumblr.

Rock Icons punk rock Patti Smith on the red carpet Noah lullabies

Proto-punk Patti Smith walked the red carpet last night for the London premiere of the Biblical epic Noah, looking every inch rock’s grande dame. Who even knew she was affiliated with the movie? Apparently, she wrote the lullaby that Noah sings to his his child, that was later used in the closing credits. And just like that, the movie just got that much more interesting. I might have to see it after all. Listen to the song below, and then check out her interview with NME where she discusses  how she wrote “Mercy Is” by studying Russell Crowe’s filmography and drawing inspiration from Nina Simone and Puccini’s operas.
