Kristin Nairn was asked about his status as a BEAR ICON in the gay community during an interview with Winter Is Coming:

Well, in all honesty, when you talk about “the gay community,” you are talking about MY community, haha. I AM aware of it yeah, and I think it’s really lovely. There’s not a day that I don’t get a few messages, but 99% or more are super sweet and nothing smutty at all! Again, it’s a privilege, and I really mean that. I’ve never hidden my sexuality from anyone, my whole life in fact, and I’ve been waiting for someone to ask about it in an interview, cos it’s not something you just blurt out. I’ve tried to lead the questions a few times, to no avail!

Which is all VERY EXCITING news for any gay Hodor fans who remember his massive tree-trunk penis from season two. I gasp just thinking about it.

Neil Patrick Harris sat down with OUT editor in chief Aaron Hicklin to talk about his about his career, his family, and his new role as Hedwig on Broadway.

But it was what he said about how playing a drag queen brought up some deep-rooted insecurities, that caught my eye:

“Hedwig is bringing up a lot of super insecure things within me. I have never thought drag was intoxicating, I’ve never had a fun drunken Halloween in drag, never been in heels, really. I’ve lived my whole life being attracted by masculinity – it’s why I like guys. I’m not a super effete person, and I have to turn into that, and in doing so it brings up a lot of homophobic insecurities within myself.”

Hmmmm. Seems odd that he hasn’t dealt with any of that by age 40, and it seems like something you might not want to actually say out loud (or to a magazine). But I guess I’m glad he’s confronting it now. Dragphobia/sissyphobia/queerphobia among straight-acting gays is detrimental to the entire community.

Sure, it’s still 11 months away, and literally NONE of these movies have come out, but that shouldn’t stop you from prematurely speculating about next year’s Oscar Race.

AMY ADAMS: In Big Eyes, directed by Tim Burton, Adams will play Margaret Keane, whose distinctive paintings were appropriated by her husband Walter (Christoph Waltz), leading to the collapse of their marriage, and a courtroom battle that saw Walter claim she was crazy. It sounds like the kind of downtrodden wife-to-independent woman arc that Adams will do beautifully, and though Burton hasn’t been awards-friendly for a long time, this project sees him reunite with the writers of Ed Wood, which won Martin Landau an Oscar. Whispers are that Adams is terrific in the film (unsurprisingly), and she can’t keep missing out forever, so she definitely seems like a force to reckon with in 2014.

MICHELLE WILLIAMS: She’s in the literary adaptation  of Suite Francaise, playing Lucille, a woman in occupied France who begins an affair with the German soldier who’s taken over her village.

ROSAMUND PIKE: She’ll play Amy Dunne in David Fincher’s adaptation of thriller phenomenon Gone Girl. It might sound from the title alone, to the uninitiated, that Rosamund Pike won’t be in the film much, but a flashback-heavy structure means she’s essentially a co-lead, and she’ll certainly be present in the category. And unless Fincher’s casting instincts have completely abandoned him, we could well see Pike following in the footsteps of Brad Pitt, Jesse Eisenbergand Rooney Mara, the leads in Fincher’s last three pictures, to a nomination. It’s a complex, multi-faceted part, and one that should give Pike a huge boost going forward.

REESE WITHERSPOON: Reese is in Wild, a based-in-fact story of a woman who, after the death of her mother and the break-up of marriage, treks over a thousand miles across the Pacific Northwest. It sounds like it’ll be something of a one-woman show (which has worked out well for James Franco and Sandra Bullock in recent years), and Jean-Marc Vallee, whose “Dallas Buyers Club” won two acting Oscars this year, is helming. The film looks to be one of Fox Searchlight’s big prospects for the season, so definitely keep an eye on Witherspoon in the months to come.

And JESSICA CHASTAIN who could possibly score nods in two films. First up, her performance in three-hour, two-part relationship epic The Disappearance Of Eleanor Rigby won raves when the film premiered at TIFF, and was picked up by The Weinstein Company, presumably to add to their awards slate. And though it’s a fairly modest indie, and doesn’t sound like a prime Oscar contender, neither did Blue Valentine at the time, but Weinsteins worked hard to get Michelle Williams a nomination a few years back. Even so, there’s a back-up plan for Chastain: J.C. Chandor’s  A Most Violent Year, in which she stars alongside Oscar Isaaac. She could yet end up in Supporting rather than Lead, but if not, given her usual form, Chandor’s track record, and the exciting-sounding material, it would be a role to bet on.

In my copious free time (it’s still freakin’ winter here in New York, so I can’t exactly go swimming!) I’ve been going through Julian’s Auction House‘s most recent offerings. I’ve found lots of goodies but they have some 20 paintings by an artist I had never heard of – Clayton LeFevre. All of the celebrity portraits were being auctioned by his estate. I found a post saying he was born in Winter Park, Florida and that he lived in Brooklyn (and worked as a waiter) up until his death in 2006. Although at some point from my sleuthing, I gathered that he has also lived in Houston as well as West Hollywood. A short mention in the LA Times says, “When Prince Charles declined to sign a painting of himself by Clayton LeFevre on grounds that the royal family does not give autographs, the West Hollywood artist was a bit put out. After all, LeFevre said, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Reagan, Eddie Murphy and other famous folks have scribbled their names on his acrylic portraits. So he decided to mark the upcoming visit of the Duke and Duchess of York with a mannequin display in the window of his gallery on Santa Monica Boulevard depicting Fergie and her royal mother-in-law as bag ladies. “I thought,” explained LeFevre, “if they are so much above it all, how would they like to be put in the position that a lot of their countrymen are in? The royal family has this regal life style and there is a lot of poverty in England.” Anyway, all of the paintings at auction are signed by each celebrity. His method to get them to do this was to make two paintings, have them sign his and give the other to the subject. (Who is going to say no to a free portrait of themselves?) All of the stars are SO of their time period, in addition to the ones shown here; Dyan Cannon (actress and once married to Cary Grant), Liz Smith (Texan and NY gossip columnist for decades) Linda Evans (of Dynasty fame) and the late Helen Gurley Brown (editor of Cosmopolitan magazine) there is a veritable “Who’s That?”, I mean a “Who’s WHO” of 70s and 80s culture; Hall & Oats, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Whitney Houston – the list goes on. His painting style is very of the period, as well. Richard Bernstein (top, left) illustrated hundreds of covers for Interview magazine, which might seem odd, as they are a similar style to founder Andy Warhol’s portraits. The late illustrator Antonio Lopez (center left) did fashion as portraits and contemporary artist, Richard Philips who works in a similar vein, did this portrait of Taylor Swift (bottom left) as part of a celebrity series. These paintings aren’t really great (and frankly the inscriptions kind of ruin them for me) but they DO capture something of the period that is intriguing. I like them – I’d kind of like to own one. I’m tempted to bid online but I’m NOT about to tell you which one I’m interested in. If Clayton were still around, can’t you picture his portrait of Miley on her next album cover?
