In today’s magazine beat: Zac Efron talks addiction, Ansel Elgort talks about his upcoming romantic teen cancer flick, Seth MacFarlance chooses not do meth, and Demi Lovato just wants to be somebody’s idol.
From Hollywood Reporter: “No matter who you are, you face challenges growing up,” he says. “You go with your things, you learn, you have to. It’s impossible to lead an honest and fulfilling life as a man and not make mistakes and ‘fess up to them when you need to. But it’s especially humiliating when they happen to be so public and so scrutinized.”
He pauses. “When you have success young, and you accept the good things, you have to accept all of it. You have to accept the moments of glory but also a great responsibility. And that responsibility, to some degree, involves being a role model. At the same time, I’m a human being, and I’ve made a lot of mistakes. I’ve learned from each one.”
“I’m grateful for every bit of that early success,” he adds. “It was hands down the most honest, carefree, passionate experience of my life. There were no expectations. [But later] I definitely felt that pressure. I’m not comfortable with it at all times. The people that I saw and the people that I started to meet, the majority were young. These were kids, and I looked into their eyes and I saw myself as a fan, and it was shocking to be on the other end of that. You just want to please every single one.”
He has joined Alcoholics Anonymous and also has been seeing a therapist. “I just started going,” he says. “And I think it’s changed my life. I’m much more comfortable in my own skin. Things are so much easier now.”
Still, he admits of his battle with addiction, “It’s a never-ending struggle.”
Ansel and Shailene talk to Time about The Fault in Our Stars:
“Ansel and I have an affinity for each other just as far as recognizing and admiring the spirits in one another,” Woodley says. “It was nice to do a movie like Fault, which does have so many vulnerable scenes with somebody I was already comfortable with.”
Elgort felt a significant connection to Augustus and it’s one that apparently resonated with the author himself. “John Green, after he saw the film, gave me a huge compliment,” Elgort says. “He said, ‘Your work as Augustus was so special because I had never thought about him that much. It’s from the point of view of Hazel in the story, so Augustus wasn’t as real of a person to me until I saw the film.’ Because now you’re watching a real person, you’re not just hearing Hazel’s thoughts about him. So it’s fresh whether you’ve read the book or not.”
Friends and colleagues say the filmmaker, who launched his first animated comedy series, Fox’s “Family Guy,” before his 25th birthday, is driven by an enviable mix of raw talent and restless curiosity that keeps him always looking for what’s next. That explains how he managed to write a novel based on the “Million Ways” screenplay in his spare time during the film shoot last summer in New Mexico.
“The book was partially something to do on the weekends, because there’s nothing to do in Santa Fe except meth, and I am too afraid to do meth,” MacFarlane says. Ballantine released the 211-page book in early March, ahead of the film’s May 30 opening.
Via Cosmopolitan: On inspiring young girls: “When I was younger, I needed someone in the spotlight to idolize, who stood for positivity and light and happiness, and wanted to change the world. And because I didn’t have that, I realized I want to do that, if only for my 12-year-old little sister.”

Exquisitely hirsute gender non-conformist Conchita Wurst belts out her song “Rise like a Phoenix,” representing Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. She’s a bold choice for the country, and one that’s not without controversy. Four days after the Australian national television and radio network ORF announced its decision, more than 31,000 people liked an “Anti-Wurst” Facebook page. In October, the Ministry of Information in Belarus received a petition calling on BTRC, Belarus’ state network, to edit Wurst’s performance out of its Eurovision broadcast. The petition claimed that the performance would turn Eurovision “into a hotbed of sodomy” (as if it already wasn’t). Since then, similar petitions surfaced in Russia and other Eastern bloc countries to edit her out of the competition during their country’s broadcasts.
Whatever. Conchita can certainly sing, and she more than holds her own against the other contestants. She’s not treated as a joke, her act isn’t campy, and her beard isn’t some gimmick. It’s just who she is. And maybe this will put to rest all those irritating “Has Kim Kardashian Grown a Beard?” joke headlines.

The Twilight movies are the gifts that just keep giving for the folks over at Bad Lip Reading. Their latest effort, for Twilight III: Eclipse, might just be their funniest. “Suntan, that’s what you need” and “I bonked my kitteh” had me ON THE FLOOR. Be sure to watch all the way to the end because there’s an extra-special, can’t-miss musical number, “Hot Potato,” sung by Bella and Jacob.

We all have to find our place in the sun. For some it’s work, for others it’s parenthood. Some seek spiritual enlightenment. Ryan Beitz of Moscow, Idaho, has found his raison d’être. His mission in life is to collect every single VHS copy of the 1994 movie Speed, starring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bukllock. So far, he has over 500 VHS tapes and 26 laser discs. (He doesn’t really care about those discs, though, they’re just there to trade for more VHS cassettes.)
What started one Christmas as gag gifts for his family (“Wouldn’t it be funny if I gave everyone VHS copies of Speed?”) quickly escalated into a frenzied sort of mono-mania when he realized he couldn’t go through it – HE COULDN’T GIVE THEM AWAY.
From VICE:
“I realized it was really fascinating to have that many, like, copies of a thing,” said Ryan. “What really cemented it was when I went down to another pawn shop, and they had, like, 30 copies. I said, ‘I’ll take them all’. They sold them to me for 11 cents a copy.” Ryan hasn’t looked back since. He said that he has about 550 now, but he hasn’t really counted them because, ‘who really cares’?
As much as he loves collecting the tapes, he doesn’t really want to waste money on what he realizes is a useless and impossible hobby. “I don’t want to spend money on this. If a copy is more than $4, I’ll just steal it,” he said. “But that’s not going to make me stop. That’d be the same as somebody saying like, ‘It’s impossible to make the world a good place, so I’m not going to try.’ If the idea is awesome, I’m just going to devote myself to it, regardless.”
Ryan is calling his bizarre attempt the ‘World Speed Project’. In his own words, he doesn’t ‘give a shit’ whether this is practical or not. In fact, he believes that his project has a deep connection to Freudian psychology. “I say it’s a practice in repetition compulsion, which is Freud. Basically, Freud thinks that the goal of your unconscious is to repeat. You just have to repeat over and over again. I can’t remember exactly why. I think it has something to do with eros – you know, the life force or whatever?”
“The World Speed Project is satisfied by a compulsion to repeat because when you get one, you want to get another! And another! And another! Like the bus in Speed, we collectively cannot – and will not – stop,” said Ryan. He is now running a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to make his bus look like the one in the movie. He also wants to buy auto insurance so he can tour his bus and his collection of Speed tapes around America. He strongly believes that the World Speed Project is against the philosophy that everything in the world needs to be useful.

A mashup artist named Neil Cicierega has created a melodic concoction that combines System Of A Down‘s “Chop Suey!” with (Sir) Elton John‘s “Crocodile Rock.” And even though System of a Down is not something I usually listen to (I prefer the dulcet tones of Austin Mahone), this… is… BRILLIANT. We don’t hear too many mashups any more, but this one is good enough to revive the trend.

Ryan. Sigh. Ryan is a straight-up bully, yo. He becomes more unlikeable every episode. And I know I work at World of Wonder, and I should be a good little cheerleader, but it’s hard to watch this guy. Last night he went to Luis’ party, picked a fight, made a scene, and TRIED TO SHOVE A POCKET SQUARE DOWN POOR LUIS’ THROAT. He knew that if Luis made a scene, he’d look bad in front of Janet and lose the listing. It was painful to watch. I HATE the way everyone treats Luis.
Fredrik got a new listing, a fabulous building in TriBeCa. He was very excited.
Everyone continues to dog-pile on my baby. First Ryan, then Fredrik, then Janet took the listing away from him– Will he EVER catch a break?
Fredrik spent $100,000 on this scale mockup of his TriBeCa building. A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS. You could buy AN ACTUAL HOUSE in MISSOURI for $100,000. People ARE STARVING IN AFRICA and he spends $100,000 on a dollhouse. This show. I swear. It’s obscene sometimes.
Ryan lost his listing. Sometimes God is good.
Fredrik was on roll. The units in his TriBeca building sold like gangbusters.
And when he went to do a high kick, he lost his shoe. It was the LOL moment of the night.
PREVIOUSLY:
Ryan had a KUH-RAZY client who wanted to rent her apartment, rather than sell. Ew.
Fredrik had a nutty client, too, who was making him a little twitchy.

But the big takeaway from the evening was Fredrik doing his Swedish Frog dance for his husband. Definitely a series highlight.

Natasha Blasick, the Ukrainian star of Paranoid Activity 2 (not to be confused with Paranormal Activity 2, just in case you were planning a Natasha Blasick marathon this weekend) told ITV’s This Morning that she had sex with a ghost and REALLY ENJOYED IT.
“I was laying in bed and then I felt something enter the room and I couldn’t see anybody. I could feel that somebody was touching me and the hands were pushing me against my will and I could feel the weight of the body on top of me. Their hands were pushing me against my will and then I could feel the weight of their body on top of me but I couldn’t see anybody. At first I was very confused then I decided to relax and it was really pleasurable, I really enjoyed it.’
She tells DigitalSpy that the spectral encounter was a positive, empowering experience
“It was fun. I think ever since I was a child I always wanted to know if there is anything more to this world, I was always asking the questions, and I think this made me feel kind of reassured that there is something more than what we can see with the naked eye. It gave me comfort and support and love, and it did answer questions for me that there is something else out there.”
Ghost expert/HuffPo blogger (*rolls eyes*) Alexandra Holzer is skeptical of her claim however, saying people who experience ghost sex don’t feel “warmth” of the kind that Blasick alleges.
“The people who report having sex with a ghost report feeling pressure on them and even penetration, but ghosts don’t have warmth. When they’re in the room, it’s a very cold environment.”
