Kim Kardashian took to her blog today to share her thoughts about the boycott of the Sultan of Brunei-owned Beverly Hills Hotel (over Brunei’s Draconian new anti-LGBT laws) and, damnit, she made a decent case for continuing to patronize the LA institution. Number one: Staying away isn’t going to hurt the Sultan. He’s worth 20 billion dollars AT LEAST, and this loss of business is a drop in the bucket to him. Number two: It’s the hotel staff that suffers. They’re the ones who are going to be hurt by the loss of business. They’re they ones who are going to lose their jobs. My best friend Allison and I wanted to take our babies out to lunch a few days ago after our baby class but there were so many paparazzi swarming us, it would have really scared them. Instead we had to feed them at her place and put them down for a nap. We were planning on taking them to the Beverly Hills Hotel, which is where we always go because they respect not having any paparazzi drive onto their property, but I reminded Allison that my bridal shower was moved from that hotel due to the actions of the Sultan of Brunei. Allison shared with me her view on the situation and we 100% agree that the actions and law enforcements of the Sultan are completely against everything we believe in.

However, I started to realize that maybe boycotting the hotel isn’t the best solution either. For a sultan that has 20 billion dollars, this loss of business doesn’t even make a dent in his fortunes. But the hotel staff are being negatively affected every day with the boycott that has gone on for weeks now… We shouldn’t punish the amazing hard-working people who have been so good to us for years! When I was a little girl, I would ride my bike to the Beverly Hills Hotel on the weekends to eat downstairs in the coffee shop with my dad, and some of the same people still work there! It’s sad to see them suffering from this protest.

There must be other ways to express our views without punishing the workers, some who I know personally have families at home and depend on the city’s business and tips to survive. When I was pregnant, the hotel was my safe haven. There’s one waitress that works downstairs who was also pregnant at the same time as me and due just a few weeks apart. We would always share our pregnancy stories with each other. I know for a fact she has a new baby at home that she has to feed, so this boycott is affecting her tremendously. The hotel is a piece of LA’s history as well as many of our own personal memories.

I support Rose McGowan and Russell Crowe’s takes on this matter. The unjust treatment and violation of rights of the LGBT community around the world is never justified and I will continue to proudly support the LGBT community in every way imaginable. I do believe though that instead of this boycott, there has to be another solution. I’m glad to hear that industry executives like Jeffrey Katzenberg and Casey Wasserman are reaching out to leaders of the hotel chain to discuss a way to potentially end the protest. I hope we can come together and stand up for our beliefs while still making sure good people aren’t wrongfully hurt in the process. Boycotting the hotel won’t affect the sultan, just our dear friends who work there. For every warm smile when they greet us and for all the dedication they put in to make our experiences more enjoyable, I hope we can return the same love and compassion to make sure they’re not forgotten during this protest. She makes a thought-provoking case. And. I’m mad at myself for liking her more and more lately. But that’s a different post for another day. Anyway.

How will the boycott end? Nine weeks in, and there still doesn’t seem to be an endgame in sight. The Hollywood Reporter offers three possible solutions:

1. Industry leaders could urge the Obama administration to withdraw visas for the sultan, his family and staff, just as it has done with Russian president Vladimir Putin (to little effect).

2. Boycotters should divert their energies to other anti-Sultan actions — for instance, pushing the Obama administration to not fast-track Brunei toward full membership of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. (More than 100 members of Congress have signed a letter asking Secretary of State John Kerry and the U.S. trade rep to insist that the Southeast Asian country repeal the anti-gay laws or face expulsion from trade talks.)

3. Boycotters could switch to a “revolving” boycott that targets different hotels at different times, including the less-affected Bel-Air Hotel, also part of the Sultan’s Dorchester Collection.

So far, there’s no sign any of the above will happen. And there’s always the possibility the sultan is too rich to care. “Our campaign is to make these hotels nuclear-radioactive and they will quickly become shadows of their former selves,” says Fred Saintz, a rep for Human Rights Campaign, the most prominent player in the boycott. “Sooner or later, the Brunei investment agency will look at their balance sheet and make the determination, this is not a going concern.”

Trailblazers  is a new annual event and television special to honor the pioneers who have broken new ground in the quest for LGBT civil rights and are leading the way towards equality. The one-hour special will feature the celebrities, politicians, activists and trendsetters who are transforming our cultural landscape, as well as musical performances from some of today’s biggest artists.

Trailblazers will premiere on Thursday, June 26th, during the most historic week of gay rights – the 45th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, and the one-year anniversary to the day of DOMA being overruled. As a tribute to this major civil rights landmark and all the social progress the ruling represents, “Trailblazers” will honor Edie Windsor and Roberta Kaplan, two of the catalysts behind that momentous achievement. The special, which will be the biggest Pride event on television, will also celebrate an entire year of “firsts” – including the first openly gay athletes competing in major professional sports.

The special will feature presenter Daniel Radcliffe, who is a longtime supporter of The Trevor Project, a performance from A Great Big World and special appearances from Jared Leto, Kylie Minogue, Ariana Grande, Rita Ora,Iggy Azalea,Tyler Glenn (Neon Trees) and Mary Lambert. Additional honorees, performers and presenters will be announced at a later date.

Linda Simpson, the Boswell of Drag, spoke to The Cut about the evolution of the New York drag scene in the late ’80s and ’90s and about her exhibition of photographs, spanning from 1987 to 1996, titled “The Drag Explosion.”

Where were these photographs taken?
Most of the earlier ones are in the East Village, especially at the Pyramid Club, which was a hotbed of drag back then. And then as drag became more popular on the nightlife scene, it expanded into a lot of clubs and nightlife in general, so a lot of my pictures are from the big clubs at the time — Limelight, Tunnel, Palladium, etc. There was a lot of media attention on the drag scene at that time, especially when RuPaul became a star, so a lot of my pictures are from the trimmings of that — at video shoots, or at movie premieres, or behind the scenes at talk shows. We were really the first drag-queen group to break through to the mainstream — we were very visible and all over the place. We familiarized a lot of people with drag.

You titled the collection “The Drag Explosion.” How did the New York City drag scene change in the years you’ve chronicled?
Well, like I said, for most of the early years that I’m talking around, it was centered in the East Village — and that scene was very rare at that point. And it was a new kind of drag — people were putting an emphasis on personality, and it wasn’t so much about impersonating old divas as it was about creating new characters. And it was very kooky and avant-garde — almost punkish. And then all of the nightlife became very dazzled with the drag phenomenon, and we were hiring drag queens to be club hosts, go-go dancers, working the door. It was a great form of eye candy, and the masses really liked it, so having these colorful people onboard would bring a lot of people to the establishment. And then RuPaul became famous with her single “Supermodel” in 1992, so all of a sudden there was a massive amount of attention — there were drag-themed videos, movies, TV shows, and tons of magazine articles, you name it. The scene just got bigger and bigger.

I would say it peaked around ’95 and then started fading, because the media was onto something else by then. And also Giuliani’s “quality of life” campaign started really cracking down on the nightlife, and drag and nightlife were going hand in hand, so there were a lot fewer places that you could perform and go out.

How does it compare to the drag scene now?
Well, it’s more spread out, I think. My scene was concentrated mostly in Manhattan, and I think that it was probably a little more unified, and we knew each other better. I think it’s actually bigger now. A lot of drag revival, not just in New York but everywhere, has been sparked by the popularity of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and so there are a lot of drag queens, and perhaps more opportunities for drag queens, with the internet. But to some degree there’s not the … I don’t know, the edginess that we had, because we were the first time that the mass media was really coming to terms with drag. Now we’re at a whole different stage, so it’s even hard to compare.

One Direction are expanding their global brand by launching a cosmetics collection. The What Makes You Beautiful hitmakers released a perfume for girls and a jewellery range last year and they are now capitalising on their international success by creating a line of make-up. Bandmember Niall Horan unveiled the collection on Twitter.com by posting a picture of his nails covered in varnish and his hands scribbled with eyeliner, eyeshadow and lipstick swatches. He wrote, “Just had a great meeting about 1D (One Direction) make-up! It’s that good I’m gona (sic) start wearing it myself.”

They didn’t become the first billion-dollar boyband for nothing!

RuPaul’s Drag Race alumnae Detox  sits down with the gayest man in showbiz, Hey Qween host Johnny McGovern, to discuss drag, Dubai, her current world tour, and upcoming rap album! The takeaway, though, is an in-depth discussion about the breakup of her drag supergroup DWV. “We still speak,” Detox tells Johnny. “There are tensions when bands– and friends – work together and travel together that much. You know, egos get in the way… But I don’t give a fuck. If there’s drama I try and stay out of it, and do my job. That’s what I’m being paid for and I love what I do, so its a shame that there is inner turmoil going on. We’re still traveling together… we’re still singing together… but there’s issues going on. We keep it cute, it’s cordial, and sometimes when we don’t keep it cute… somebody has to say something… Sometimes that somebody is me, sometimes I have to (crack the whip), ‘Get it together, we have a job to do, let’s do it!’” She ended by saying: “I just want to do good shows and suck on some good cock.” Here, here, honey.
