The Libertines Torture Themselves In their New Video “The Heart of the Matter”

Oh! remember the glory days of the Libertines and Pete & Kate and all that was good and right about the mid-aughts? Remember how we used to dance away the night to “Gunga Din” in our skinny suits and porkpie hats? WISHING we were as cool as they were? Their new song “The Heart of the Matter” certainly takes you back to those golden days of yore. The video, however, is another story.

Directed by Roger Sargent, the gritty clip depicts a booth wherein customers pay to watch Peter Doherty and Carl Barât interrogate and torture some unfortunate fellows who turn out to be… themselves. And while I always love to see new stuff by the Libertines, this is pretty grim. Watch it below via NME.

Here’s what Sargent had to NME about the video:

The Libertines have never been a band to lack candour or bravery… almost to a fault. Their honesty, their friendship, has played out in the public domain often with catastrophic consequences. In “Heart Of The Matter”, Peter and Carl reflectively talk about the damage and abuse they have caused themselves over the years, openly mystified that they have survived thus far. It’s a catharsis, a bleak, bold and brave one. To that end, when we talked about making the video for the song we all felt it had to be similarly honest. The unsettling subjects could not be shied away from. On the contrary, these had to be faced head on.
