General Hospital (and 7th Heaven! Don’t forget 7th heaven!) actress Nancy Lee Grahn maybe had herself a few too many Pinot Grigiots during last night’s Emmy Awards. Maybe she was feeling cranky and left out. Or maybe she’s just lost her damn mind, I don’t know. SOMETHING, though, made the soap star inexplicably criticize Viola Davis for her perfectly electrifying Best Actress acceptance speech. The backlash was swift and brutal, which only made David dig herself in deeper. Then, when later she apologized, kind of, sort of, she still insisted she was right, just misunderstood.
“Im a f**king actress for 40 yrs. None of us get respect or opportunity we deserve. Emmys not venue 4 racial opportunity. ALL women belittled,” she wrote in a tweet she has since deleted tweet (but was captured by BuzzFeed).
After what I’m assuming was an intervention from her publicist, manager, agent, General Hospital producer, and AA sponsor, she posted this extended tweet:
I apologize for my earlier tweets and now realize I need to check my own privilege. My intention was not to take this historic and important moment from Viola Davis or other women of color but I realize that my intention doesn’t matter here because that is what I ended up doing. I learned a lot tonight and I admit that there are still some things I don’t understand but I am trying to and will let this be a learning experience for me.
The lesson, of course, children, is THINK before you tweet.
