“In a city like New York, you’re never alone. even when you’re dining alone,” says the YouTube tag line to this commercial/mini-movie for Kate Spade starring an absolutely adorable Anna Kendrick and – GASP! – journalist, author, and feminist icon Gloria Steinem. Anna arrives at the Russian Tea Room but finds her usual table has been taken. She then spends the rest of the ad talking to her sparkly gnome purse (which I NEEEEEEEEED) and spying on Ms Steinem. It’s as amazing as it sounds.
Steinem, let it be noted, is wearing Kate Spade’s $170 Makenzie sunglasses and carries the brand’s $598 Cloverdale Drive Tolland purse. Anna is wearing a fur-collared coat. Yes, it looks real. BAD ANNA.

The video’s “dining alone” theme goes along with another interview Steinem filmed with Kate Spade about the power of going out to dinner with just a book for company. “When I started out, you couldn’t go into a certain number of hotels alone if you were a female. You couldn’t be seated alone. There was something scandalous about it,” Steinem said in the video interview for Kate Spade. “Finally if you were seated alone it was by the kitchen. So it’s actually a civil right to dine alone.”
